“Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind.”

Genesis 9:15
I need reminders. Scribbled notes on scrap paper won’t do the trick; they get lost. Neon-colored sticky notes come undone. I need a more tangible reminder. A crushed empty milk bottle on my car seat, for example, successfully reminds me that I need to buy milk.

God uses reminders too, though not in the same sense that we do. In His infinite wisdom and understanding, He is never forgetful like we are. The Old Testament records several places where God says He remembers His covenant. When our Scripture reading tells us this twice (v. 15 and v. 16), it means that He is reminding us of His promises. We are the ones likely to forget. We need the tangible reminders.

And what a spectacular, brilliant sign the rainbow is! It takes my breath away whenever I see it. It reminds me that our God is faithful and always remembers His promises. He will never again cover the earth with a flood. Each time a rainbow appears, you might say He remembers to us His precious promises. But His most tangible reminder of His love? Jesus Christ!
