“He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young.”

Isaiah 40:11
The Bible uses the metaphor of Jesus as our shepherd. He Himself said, “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me” (John 10:14). He leads us, His flock, with loving kindness, watching over us like an attentive shepherd who makes sure his sheep get to green pastures and refreshing water. He knows the way; He leads. The biblical description of this kind of care for us warms our hearts, doesn’t it?

The phrase at the end of Isaiah 40, “he gently leads those that have young,” is especially comforting. If ever there is a time when we as grown-ups find ourselves lost like sheep, it’s when we are raising or teaching young ones. The Lord is sensitive to our hard situations as we bring up little ones in this world.

Sometimes it’s difficult to know what is best. We try so hard to “train a child in the way he should go,” trusting as Proverbs 6:22 says that “when he is old he will not turn from it.” “Experts” of all kinds freely offer advice. Turn to your good Shepherd. He’ll gently lead you each step of the way.
