“For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible … and in him all things hold together.”

Colossians 1:16-17
Sometimes I gaze around my office and wonder how the place got so messy. Only one person works here! Am I really so careless? So hasty? As I dash off to my next meeting or appointment, I tell myself I’ll straighten up later (unfortunately, often it’s much later!).

But God, who planned and created the entire universe, did all things in order. Genesis 1 describes the orderly way in which God created every living thing. In case we missed the point, we are reminded through Paul that “God is not a God of disorder but of peace” (1 Corinthians 14:33). As children of this Holy God, we long to bring that peace and order into our own lives.

Perhaps you’ve told yourself at times that some self-discipline would help, or that more of God and less entertainment and screen time would bring order to your life. These things certainly may be helpful. Remember that He has told us what He requires of us: “To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Let everything for your day fall into that framework.
