“Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”

Revelation 3:20
My mom always sought to be a gracious hostess, and she frequently consulted her etiquette books by Amy Vanderbilt and Emily Post. She was determined to do things properly and to train me as well. From her I learned that when introducing someone, the older or the one higher in rank should be addressed first: “Grandma, this is my friend, Susie.” I learned that soup spoons and dessert forks have their right places near the plate. I was taught all food must be passed before anyone takes a bite. There are a lot of rules for gracious hosting!

The thing about etiquette and graciousness is that it’s really all about putting someone else before yourself. Who could there possibly be that has shown more grace and graciousness to us than our heavenly Father? He sent His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross for us, paying the price for our sin.

The resurrected Lord continues to be gracious to us. Whether He stirs in our lives like a roaring lion or as one gently knocking at the door of our hearts, His grace is offered freely to us.
