“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9
Fridays are trash days in my neighborhood, and I always look forward to clearing out some clutter then. I enjoy emptying wastebaskets, filling up the recycle bin, and cleaning out the refrigerator. Every week it feels good to get rid of the junk. That regular clean-up reminds me of how good it is to confess my sins each night and rid myself of the burden of guilt.

Have you made a practice of settling accounts with the Lord? I review the day and search for selfish or unkind words I’ve spoken (or even thought). I ask for the Lord’s forgiveness for each one. As I pray for anyone else who was involved, I ask the Lord to keep me from repeating my mistakes. I beg Him for vigilance, self-awareness, and guidance. Then I can sleep in good conscience, trusting the Lord to sustain me and guide me tomorrow.

When God clears away the day’s “trash” of guilty thoughts and sin, He renews us from the inside out. He freely offers this forgiveness every single time we fall short. Because Jesus paid the price, we are washed clean.
