“I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be my people. I am the LORD your God.”

Leviticus 26:12-13a
Who is God?

He is Lord, creator of the universe, and sustainer of life on earth. He is eternal, infinite, unchangeable, glorious, wise, just, slow to anger, merciful, compassionate, and abounding in steadfast love. Some of the great historical statements of faith of the church say that God is three persons in one, is everywhere yet has no body as we do, knows all, and can do all.

God is so great and so amazing that we could never finish defining and describing who and what He is. The problem is, the word god has worked its way into our everyday conversations so much that its awesome meaning has been cheapened. It’s been demoted, as it were, to an expression of surprise and even to a curse word.

We would be fools to use it in vain. Yet nearly everyone does.

When we say “God” with the Trinitarian Lord in mind, we recapture the sense of honor and glory that He deserves. After all, were it not for Him, there would be no words to express His wonder and majesty at all. His very Word became flesh and lived among us. The God of all creation has drawn near!
