“When the angel of the LORD appeared to Gideon, he said, ‘The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.’”

Judges 6:12
We come to the point of the book of Judges in the Bible when Israel was on the decline, apostasy was growing, and attack from the Midianite enemy was near. The Israelites cried to God for rescue, but He wanted genuine repentance and confession of their sin (see Judges 6:1-7:22). Gideon, chosen by God to lead the nation, was hiding from a Midianite attack in a winepress when God—Jesus Himself in angelic form—appeared saying, “The LORD is with you, mighty warrior.” Gideon objected, but God saw the potential in him, assuring Gideon of His presence. Eventually, Gideon’s name would be recorded in Hebrews 11 as one of our heroes of faith.

God emboldened Gideon and told him, “Go in the strength you have and save Israel out of Midian’s hand. … I will be with you” (vv. 14, 16). Gideon’s reluctance ended after he worshiped God and urged his men to go.

There are times we know God is pushing us to make a connection, to pursue a position of leadership, or simply to take the next step. Often we resist. Go with His comforting promise: “I am with you.”
