“Now give me this hill country that the LORD promised me that day.”

Joshua 14:12a
I’m close in age to Caleb and Joshua as we read of them at this point in the Bible. I love these men, two old guys committed to serving God. Caleb said to Joshua, “So here I am today, eighty-five years old! I am still as strong …; I’m just as vigorous to go out into battle now” (v. 10-11). If they were around today, they’d be wearing t-shirts like the one my friend gave me which says on it, Old Guys Rule!

Caleb had been on the special ops mission from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the Promised Land (Numbers 13-14). He brought back intelligence that with God’s help they could prevail over the enemy. Now 25 years later and never doubting God’s faithfulness, he’s determined to take the hill country of Hebron and conquer the giants who lived there.

Caleb possessed such confidence because he “followed the LORD… wholeheartedly” (v. 14). He knew God was faithful throughout his entire life. He is faithful to you, too! Even if you are aging, your enthusiasm for service to God need not diminish. He’ll hearten you for whatever is ahead.
