“The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”

Psalm 16:6
My favorite kind of gift is one that I never expected—the kind of gift a friend or thoughtful coworker sees and just picks up for you because they know you’ll like it. When the gift is given regardless of what I have or haven’t done to deserve it, it makes it that much dearer. It’s nearly impossible to view a gift as a blessing if we believe that we deserve it.

All that we have is the result of the goodness of God. By extension, as hard as it may be to believe, all that we don’t have is also because of the goodness of God. The psalmist wrote that the believer’s cup and portion is solely his God. Our heavenly inheritance is secure, and the boundary lines for us have “fallen in pleasant places.”

It is a hard thing to look at what we lack or what we ache for and still believe that God is good. It is even more difficult to accept that at times He purposely withholds from us. Be assured that when God withholds good things from us, it is for our good. His perfect love for us begins to teach us that in Him we lack no good thing (v. 2).
