“He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

Proverbs 14:31
The proverb above teaches us something important about acts of generosity. We tend to think of our generosity—whether financial with the donation of our time or other assets—as a primarily horizontal transaction. In other words, when we share our resources with others, it helps the other person. But the Bible says there is more going on, something vertical as well as horizontal.

How we treat others actually communicates honor to God. God created human beings, and therefore, when we mistreat others, we insult God. We say to Him, “Your creatures are not worth my effort.” But when we show generosity, we reverence God Himself. We tell Him through those acts that we value the things He has made, that they are worth our investment, and that we want to treat them respectfully.

How can we become more generous? It flows from a heart captivated by the kindness of God. He is truly “generous to the needy” in providing a Savior to a rebellious people who could provide no return other than lives filled with gratitude to Him.
