“I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them—yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.”

1 Corinthians 15:10
I’ve read a number of tragic news stories about athletes who have taken their own lives. This hit close to home last year when a high school cross-country runner on one of the teams we compete with did the same. While one can never know the hearts of these individuals, what is clear is that sports cannot meet a need for fulfillment realized only in Jesus Christ.

Here is what Paul tells us: “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. … I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:12-13).

Interestingly, this verse is one that athletes often misapply, quoting it as if to assure success in their competition. Paul is conveying that in victory or defeat, contentment is found in recognizing one’s need for Christ. We must admit that the world does not revolve around us, but around Jesus. When we are the center of our universe, trials and tribulations destroy us.

However, with our hearts set on Christ and His glory, we can endure all things as Jesus works within us to bring about His purposes.
