“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire … the flames will not set you ablaze.”

Isaiah 43:2
In the midst of the storm, the disciples saw Jesus walking towards them on the water, and it terrified them. He said, “It is I; don’t be afraid” (John 6:20). They helped Him into the boat and shortly thereafter reached the shore of Capernaum, the shore they had been rowing strenuously toward for three-and-a-half miles. When Jesus shows up, storms are but avenues to His safe shores.

Jesus never promised that there would be no storms in life. But He promises that when we trust Him through the storms, He will see us through. We can learn from the birds. If a bird flies for pleasure, it goes with the wind. But if the bird meets danger, it turns right around and faces the wind, in order that it may rise higher. The trials, tragedies, and storms in our lives are God’s winds which lift us higher and to a more meaningful relationship with Him.

“He said, ‘Trust the grace I am giving,/ All-pervasive, sufficient for you./ Take My hand, we will face this together;/ But My plan is not over, but through’” (Lee Webber, 1986).
