“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”

John 3:17
Every 12 years, millions of Hindus wanting to be cleansed from their sins flock to Allahabad, India, to take a dip in the Ganges River. But you can receive true forgiveness—real cleansing for your soul—from the One who conquered sin on the cross and rose from the dead.

The adulterous woman had a life-changing encounter with Jesus. He said to her, “Has no one condemned you? … Then neither do I. … Go now and leave your life of sin” (v. 10-11). When Jesus shows up, the soiled are cleansed and the fallen forgiven.

The childhood of my dear friend was filled with repeated messages that he was a sinner undeserving of grace. As an adult he never felt worthy to take communion. We often discussed it. Then one Sunday morning, as the communion elements were being distributed, he took them. I saw the tears rolling down his cheeks. He felt free from condemnation, and he knew he was cleansed, forgiven. He realized there’s more mercy in God than there is sin in us. That’s what happens when Jesus’ cleansing power washes over us.
