“‘Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Christ?’ They came out of the town and made their way toward him.”

John 4:29-30
Jesus confronted the Samaritan woman with the truth of her life. She’d had five husbands and now was living with another man. Then Jesus revealed that He was the Messiah. She went home, and many came to believe in Him because of her testimony. That a Samaritan woman had become a valued ambassador for Jesus is remarkable. In the presence of Jesus, the outcast are recast.

Take Shelly Wift, for example. In 1995 she and several of her fellow witches donned their Halloween finery and went to Salem, Massachusetts. They met a trio of evangelical students. She was transfixed by their message of faith and hope in Christ. “At first I argued with them. But then they said some really persuasive, powerful things. I found I couldn’t argue anymore.” She spent the rest of the night reading the Bible the students gave her and took a bus back to New York. There she found a church and was baptized. “I wish I had gotten those students’ names. I have always wished I could write them a letter to tell them how they changed my life” (2003).
