“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

John 13:35
Years ago my fellow staff member ordered tickets for our flight. Unknown to me, he used his air credits to get a first class seat. As we boarded the plane, he gave me his first class seat and went back to my coach seat, wanting me to experience the luxury of extra room and service. I was deeply moved. I tried to argue with him (though not too hard!), but he wasn’t about to change his mind. So I graciously accepted his gift.

He demonstrated Jesus’ view of discipleship, which was shared by Paul: “Outdo one another in showing honor” (Romans 12:10, Revised Standard Version). It’s perhaps the only time we are told to outdo someone else. Imagine how different our world of competition would be if we truly tried to outdo one another in showing love.

Paul thought a world of “honor competition” was worth writing about. So I believe it’s worth thinking about. No one has honored you more than your Savior who gave His very life for you. And He didn’t do so to outdo anyone; He did it all because of His matchless love for you.
