“Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.”

John 3:18
Numbers 21:4-9 record how the Israelites sinned in the desert, and God sent a plague of venomous snakes. To be bitten meant death. The people cried out to Moses who cried out to God. God told him to craft a bronze snake, put it on a pole, and raise it up. Anyone who looked at the bronze serpent would be healed. Generations later Jesus said, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life” (John 3:14-15). The serpent of death was Jesus’ studio of life.

“We have to recognize that … sin is red-handed mutiny against God. Either God or sin must die in my life. … If sin rules in me, God’s life in me will be killed; if God rules in me, sin in me will be killed” (Oswald Chambers, 1935). When Jesus was crucified, all the “venom” of sin and evil of the world were placed on Him. Our only hope of healing is through our Savior, lifted up on the cross.

When sin’s consequences overwhelm you, enter Jesus’ studio by gazing upward to Him.
