“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”

John 1:4
“In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.”

As a nurse, my wife helped transport a patient with heart issues to another town. But en route, the ambulance lost power, so to keep the man alive she performed CPR until another ambulance arrived. Her presence meant life for this man. Without her lifesaving efforts, he would have died. When we think of instances like this, we begin to comprehend how valuable life is; we contemplate how fragile it is, especially apart from God.

Life is a major theme for John—the word “life” occurs 36 times in his gospel. You might say his theme is “When Jesus shows up, life happens.” Jesus, in fact, said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). The full life we have now and the magnificent life we will know with Him in heaven one day come from one power source: Jesus. When we are “plugged in” to Him, His light shines in our world.

Without Jesus, life is futile and as hopeless as the man in the ambulance with no one to administer CPR. Jesus is life, and He came to place His life-giving Spirit in you.
