“Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.”

John 16:22
Jesus knew His death would shatter the disciples. In His absence, they would feel an emptiness. They’d long for His wisdom, guidance, and comfort. They’d know sorrow at its deepest level.

But Jesus said, “I will see you again.” Though they could not fully understand what He meant, they had His promise. While they’d rather not go through the separation, at least they knew and trusted that somehow Jesus would see them again.

A birthing mother knows pain and anguish. But then she knows the joy of new life! Jesus says life is like that (v. 21). The sorrow you experience now is leading to the joy which shall be yours when you are reunited with loved ones and meet Jesus face to face.

“Friends will be there I have loved long ago;/ Joy like a river around me will flow;/ Yet just a smile from my Savior, I know,/ Will through the ages be glory for me./ O, that will be glory for me,/ Glory for me, glory for me,/ When by His grace I shall look on His face,/ That will be glory, be glory for me” (Charles H. Gabriel, 1900).
