“Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again. But whoever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. The water I give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:14
In 1986 two Israeli brothers made an incredible discovery in the Sea of Galilee. They were monitoring their fishing equipment when they noticed something visible in the sunlight just below the water’s surface. Archeologists determined they’d discovered a fishing boat dating from Jesus’ time. The only reason the artifact was seen was because a three-year drought resulted in unusually low water in the lake, exposing the ancient boat.

That story reminds me of how Jesus shows up in the midst of our dryness.

He went on a mission to Samaria, stopping at Jacob’s well to rest when a Samaritan woman came to draw water. Jesus stunned her as He asked her for a drink of water. A long conversation ensued; Jesus offered Himself as the living water that is always in abundant supply.

With Jesus in our lives, dryness is drenched. And when our lives draw to a close, we have this comfort: “For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water’” (Revelation 7:17).
