“Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

John 8:32
Angel was fiercely angry. From childhood, life had dealt him nothing but one bad hand after another. Sentenced to life in prison as a three-time offender, he seethed with resentment toward everyone.

Often he was sent to confinement for lashing out at authorities, and that deepened his anger. But the last time Angel went to confinement, something changed. That time Angel was met in his cell by Jesus Christ.

With nothing to do, Angel picked up the only book in the cell, a Bible, and began reading. Soon something (or Someone!) came over him. Angel said, “I knew that the Spirit of Christ was in that place.”

He surrendered his life to Jesus that day. When I met Angel, he was faithfully serving others, studying hard, and seeking to grow in his knowledge and love of God. He is one of the most upbeat men I’ve ever known.

He is still serving a life sentence; it’s unlikely that he will go home. But Angel knows true freedom is not limited by fences and razor wire. He reminded me, “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (v. 36).
