“For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

1 Corinthians 1:18
I have always loved the somewhat unusual culture of the fishing world. It is something that looks peculiar to the uninitiated outsider. Fishermen tend to have their own way of talking, dressing, and doing things that can just be sort of strange. Once I convinced my wife to join me on a short fishing adventure so that she could see why I loved the sport so much. On our way home I asked her what she thought. She shared that it was fun to be on the ocean and that the people certainly were nice, “but to someone on the outside, you must look pretty weird!”

Paul makes much of the fact that in the world’s view, the message of the gospel isn’t just weird; it’s downright foolish. As we become beacons for the gospel, we must realize that we are designed to give a living testimony to God’s countercultural wisdom. This is truly the wisdom of God that is being displayed to a foolish world.

And it may indeed make us look peculiar in the world’s eyes. Don’t worry about the world’s opinions. We have been given Christ, the very wisdom of God.
