“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Colossians 3:22, 4:1
On my morning walk recently I saw a blue heron standing perfectly still by a pond. He seemed peaceful and indifferent about my presence. It made me think of the voice of the Spirit saying to me, “You too can be peaceful and unmoved, even when threats abound, because I am with you.” How we all need these reminders to set our hearts on things above, not on all the world’s preoccupations.

I don’t know how life was in Colossae, but it probably was a lot more like our life today than we would imagine. We face jobs to do, bills to pay, birthdays and holidays to celebrate, broken things to repair, meetings to attend, relationships to maintain, and so on. How can we not be focused on earthly things when they demand such attention?

Try being in regular attendance at church where you’ll have a weekly opportunity to refocus your distracted heart. Read the Bible. Daily sings songs and hymns that turn your heart to praise. Take notice of things around you that point to Jesus’ magnificent plan of redemption in your life.
