“When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.”

Proverbs 4:12
One stormy night a man was crossing a mountain. The moon shone dimly through the clouds, so he put his lantern under his cloak to protect his hands from the biting wind. A gust of wind blew open his coat, and the light shone to reveal the edge of a large quarry; with one more step, he’d have fallen. The light saved him.

Several years ago Andrew Young, former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, spoke on a similar note to the University of Maryland’s graduating class. He told them to get a Bible. “It won’t hurt you at all,” he said, “and it will give you more illumination and purpose in life. It’s better to invest [a small amount] in a Bible now than [a fortune] for a psychiatrist later.”

The prophet Jeremiah understood the power of the Word to keep our steps firm. “This is what the LORD says: ‘Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls’” (6:16).

Will you walk firmly in the Word’s power or will you stumble when your steps are hampered?
