“On this day the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, but now the tables were turned and the Jews got the upper hand over those who hated them.”

Esther 9:1
It might be easy here to get distracted by all the killing and lose the forest through the trees. From the days of Noah (Genesis 6) to the end of the age (Revelation 19), salvation for God’s people has always also meant the judgment of God’s enemies. The blood of Abel has cried out to God from the ground since the day he was murdered by Cain, calling for justice in a world made mad by sin. For God to be just, evil must not go unpunished. The blood of Jesus reminds us that He bore that punishment for the sake of His people.

There will be a day when Christ visibly prevails over the world, and we will prevail with Him. The holiday of Purim is still celebrated amongst modern day Jews, with the hope that God will enable them to prevail over their afflictions and their enemies.

For Christ-followers, this isn’t merely a hope, but a certainty. It’s a glowing confidence in the power of Jesus to finish what He has started. These present sufferings just can’t compare to the future glory awaiting us (see Romans 8:18).
