“Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.”

Philippians 2:14-15
Grumbling seems like a small sin compared to many. Why should it matter if I complain a little as long as I do the right thing? But, like a child who stomps her feet on the way to make her bed, a grumble says NO even though actions say Yes.

Some things are easier than others for us to do cheerfully. I actually like to iron, but I consider dusting to be a tedious, repetitive task. Paul tells us to do everything without grumbling. Such a comprehensive command leaves no loopholes. We are forced to stop and pray for the Holy Spirit’s power to change our attitudes before we take another step.

Why would Paul set such an impossibly high standard? Why do attitudes matter as much as actions? Because I am called to be a light to the world around me, reflecting as fully as possible the light of my ascended Savior. When my attitude leaves smudges, it dims the glory of Christ-like obedience, marring my witness to the world, including the unseen world of angels and demons.

But consider the alternative: with God’s help, our light shines brilliantly!
