“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.” Isaiah 55:1

Isaiah 55:1
If you’ve ever been at something for a long time but have seen very little results from your efforts, you probably know how cynicism can set in. You feel weary and defeated. You question God’s goodness on your behalf. When prayers aren’t answered as we want or when we want, we transform from being trusting children to cynical adults.

How do we fight this cynicism? We come to God in prayer as we are called to in the opening verses of Isaiah 55—with abandon, without concern for how it sounds or looks, with enjoyment!

Jesus’ prayer in Matthew 11:28 reveals that He is the source of rest promised in Isaiah: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” It may be an ongoing process. “As you develop your relationship with your heavenly Father, you’ll change. You’ll discover nests of … pride, and self-will in your heart” (Paul Miller, 2009). But your heavenly Father will not leave you there. He will nourish you, melt away your cynicism, and rekindle your joy as you keep coming to Him in prayer.
