“I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.”

Psalm 16:7-8
The words of Psalm 16 describe David’s relationship with the Lord. In knowing Him there is counsel and instruction for life.

When I was serving on Okinawa, I took the late shift program on our Christian radio station. Nighttime was lonely for many of our military personnel. Often a listener would call in and ask about the words of a song or about comments I’d made. Some of those callers had been in combat; others knew combat was ahead. I remember having shared Psalm 16 one night when a USAF pilot called in. We ended up praying, asking for God’s presence with him as he was about to fly out on a difficult mission.

Verse 11 summarizes what happens in fellowship with God. When you take refuge in Him, your mind is refreshed with the confidence of His presence for now and the future: “You have made known to me the path of life.” Then comes the Holy Spirit’s indwelling: “You will fill me with joy in your presence.” And finally, your eyes are opened to all the blessings He gives: “With eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
