“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.”

Isaiah 55:1
The Lord does not leave us in our sin. He shows us the emptiness of our worldly hunger, for “Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?” (v. 2). Why would we so squander our lives, when we can eat what is good and delight in rich foods? Should not this stark contrast make us salivate for the things of God?

Indeed, He invites us to do so. We need not waste our lives for the sake of starvation any longer. Our searching for satisfaction from the world’s goods can end. We can go to the Lord with our thirst, and He will quench it. We can go to Him with our hunger, and He will satisfy it. How much will this cost? Nothing to us. There is no price for us to pay—it is free! It’s the best possible deal: we bring the hunger, and He’ll bring the food.

But that does not mean that the check went unpaid. Somebody picked up our tab. He saw our great hunger, and He said, “I’ll pay.” The immense cost that would bring famished people to the feast would be borne by our Savior.

If He has paid so great a price, should we not long for so great a feast?
