“I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.”

2 Timothy 1:6
It is helpful to have people with perspective in our lives. Without them, we see a distorted view of ourselves as in a house of carnival mirrors. But when we let godly people in, they can show us our blind spots as well as evidences of grace we may be missing.

Paul was an honest encourager to Timothy, someone with godly perspective. He was thankful to see Timothy’s faith. But he didn’t leave it there; he encouraged him not to grow complacent. He called him to “fan into flame the gift of God” that was in him. Hearkening back perhaps to the moment of Timothy’s ordination to the ministry, Paul remembers that God set Timothy apart for ministry and called him into service.

Each of us has abilities for use in God’s service and kingdom. Timothy and Paul’s gifts were teaching and preaching. Yours may be in serving in some way, dispensing mercy, leading, encouraging others, creating beauty, raising godly children, caring for the elderly, and so on. Let’s be stewards of the good deposit He’s placed in us, using our gifts for His glory.
