“Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth … who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. They will not get very far … their folly will be clear to everyone.”

2 Timothy 3:8-9
Paul issued stern warnings to Timothy to guard against false teachers. He also told Timothy not to be surprised because such trials are part of living in these last days between Jesus’ first and second coming. Neither are we surprised about the abundance of false teaching that exists in our world now. Unbiblical teaching has destructive results.

We read of how these false teachers will be known. They are always learning but never arriving at the knowledge of the truth (v. 7). On the outside they may seem like great students—well-read and advancing. But a lack of grounding in God’s Word leads them to constant error in their conclusions. In fact, they oppose the truth (v. 8) openly. They are like Jannes and Jambres, very likely the magicians in Pharaoh’s court who clashed with Moses. Like those two, false teachers will not get very far. Those who lead God’s people astray will eventually be judged, whether in this life or the next.

Be a careful student of God’s Word, allowing it to change your heart, not bending it to say what you prefer.
