“If we disown him, he also will disown us; if we are faithless, he will remain faithful, for he cannot disown himself.”

2 Timothy 2:12b-13
As wonderful as the benefits are of following Jesus, the consequences of denying Him are also great. If you have even a basic understanding of hell, you will shudder to think of it.

For those who deny the power and salvation offered in Jesus, there will come a day when Jesus will deny them as well. He will say, “I never knew you. Apart from me, you evildoers” (Matthew 7:23)! These words are chilling for anyone—even especially believers—to consider. They press us to cast ourselves daily on God’s mercy, longing to hear a better word: “Well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:21).

The good news for us sinners is found at the very end of this saying. Paul reminds us that on the days when our faith is fading, Jesus Christ “remains faithful.” Praise God that Jesus cannot deny Himself! Brothers and sisters, our eternal hope is grounded in God’s faithfulness, not ours. For a time He denied His Son, turning away so that in our place Jesus would bear the punishment and wrath for our sins. Now we stand forgiven at the foot of the cross.
