“David said to the Philistine, ‘… I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me.’”

1 Samuel 17:45-46
Sometimes God moves in dramatic ways to make His sovereign power known. In our Scripture, God had prepared David long before for this moment of one-on-one battle.

Goliath would have been perhaps 10 feet tall, maybe more than 300 pounds, and extremely strong. His armor would have weighed 200 pounds, 20 pounds alone for just the tip of his spear! But David needed only his slingshot and five stones, for his confidence was in God.

It recently dawned on me that God’s plan of redemption for the whole world was at stake right there at that battle camp. The Savior was to come through David’s descendants. If God was not who He claimed to be, David was done for, and his line was extinguished.

You’re going to face “giants” in your life, people and situations that terrify you. Never forget: the battle belongs to the Lord. The Apostle Paul reminds us, “Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power” (Ephesians 6:10). God’s strength, mercy, and compassion are with us personally today and are far more effective than the might of our enemies.
