“Sing to the LORD! Give praise to the LORD! He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of the wicked.”

Jeremiah 20:13
One of the things no one told me about adulthood is that you often feel several emotions at the same time. Emotions become more convoluted as our lives (and problems) become more complex. This is especially true when it comes to change, or, in some cases, when the change we hoped and prayed for never comes.

Jeremiah 20 is an encouraging passage for the believer who is trying to sort through emotions during times of great sorrow. When our lives suddenly go sideways, it can be difficult to know what to do or think about our circumstances. Passages like this one show us that feelings of despair, hope, praise, and bitterness can all exist in the same moment.

Even the jumbled mind of a person who is in circumstances far more severe than they imagined can sing out praises. Even in the midst of the agony that Jeremiah must have felt, he trusted that God would do what He said He would. While we may not feel like we are in any shape to pray, we can rest in the fact that our Father still hears us, even if our prayers come through tears.
