“Sing… to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Ephesians 5:19b-20

“This Bible verse has been profoundly moving to me because it challenges me to sacrifice my desire to control my life and urges me instead to give thanks always for all things. When I acknowledge that God is sovereign, that my life and every part of it are under His loving control, I am free from anxiety. I can thank Him even for the things I dislike. I can love and trust my heavenly Father in peace and joyful confidence.”

These words from today’s prisoner-contributor are filled with hope. When someone is facing an entire life behind bars but still holds tightly to God’s Word and can give thanks, you know the gospel is real.

God takes us in our sinful condition—really not unlike earth’s inhabitants back in the book of Genesis for whom “every inclination of the thoughts of [man’s] heart was only evil all the time” (6:5)—and gives us reason to be thankful. “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:8).
