“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”

Psalm 46:1-2
For George Slay, it was a normal Tuesday as he started his day on the 91st floor of the North Tower in the World Trade Center 20 years ago. Even when he felt the first plane crash just above his office, he didn’t yet know how bad it really was. Later, he would learn that no one on floors 92 and up made it out alive. He was, in fact, one of the very last to escape the building before it collapsed.

He’d been talking to a colleague on the phone that morning when he heard a loud roar, turned to look out the window, and saw a large passenger jet. He dove beneath his desk as the building shook and everything began to disintegrate. He prayed and prayed to God to save him. He and others went down a stairwell, and, once at the bottom, were caught up in a cloud of dust and debris from the explosion.

George knew powerfully that day that God is our ever-present help, the One we cry out to when the earth seems to be crumbling around us. He’s the Almighty (see vv. 7, 11). What a wonder it is that He is ever-present in our lives.
