“It is written: ‘Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

Matthew 4:4
One of the unique challenges of long distance running is adequately fueling the body for peak performance. Many times I have seen athletes running strong, looking like they are going to have an excellent race, but then they completely “bonk.” There is a sudden slowing of pace; arms and legs begin to flail; sometimes the athlete will even collapse, often just shy of the finish line. This is the effect of glucose and caloric deprivation. The athlete simply did not have enough fuel to meet the demands of the race.

As believers in Jesus, we may find ourselves “bonking” spiritually. When life’s race becomes challenging, we flounder and fall. We lack motivation or find ourselves in a pit of depression. The Bible reminds us of the importance of fueling our soul with God’s Word, which is both life-giving and sustaining. Jesus says in Matthew 4:4 that feeding on His Word truly is a matter of life and death.

We cannot face life’s challenges without the Word, our necessary fuel that strengthens us, gives us wisdom, and helps us endure to the end.
