“Rich and poor have this in common: the LORD is the Maker of them all.”

Proverbs 22:2
Some philosophers have said that all the struggles of history can be summed up as the rich exploiting the poor, that rich and poor are fundamentally two groups warring for supremacy in a world of limited resources. In our current age, similar distinctions between people groups have been made. We label humanity on the basis of endless categories. Ironically, in the name of creating equality among groups, more division is sown.

Into that context, this proverb preaches a refreshing truth. Solomon reminds us that rich and poor are more similar than they are different. Why? Because they share a common Maker. What this means is that ultimately humanity cannot be divided into neat categories. Our human nature was created by and defined by God. It’s a nature that God the Son Himself assumed in the incarnation when He was born of a virgin, making Him the one mediator between God and man.

Take care, then, not to divide up the human race into man-made categories. Instead let’s meet together without judgment or discrimination.

Are there ways in which you see yourself as more different from others than you are similar to them? Remember that the Lord God made us all!
