“Be filled with the Spirit. Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything.”

Ephesians 5:18-20
Maintaining an encouraging perspective is not easy in a world that seems to grow darker by the minute. But as a candle chases away the darkness, so we can encourage those who need it.

The Bible tells us God is El Elyon, the Most High God—greater than any earthly problem. Still, it’s easy for troubles to shift our focus from God to our situation. That’s why Paul urged us to remind each other, by the Holy Spirit’s power, of God’s nature and His ways.

I needed these reminders as I cared for my husband in his last days. Caregiving can be isolating and discouraging. Bedridden patients may fall prey to dark thoughts which they don’t always share. And those thoughts pave the way for depression to fill their spirits.

Attending to physical needs is only one part of caregiving. We can also share encouragement with our words, the music we play or sing, and how we live. As children of light, we live in the light of Christ. By remembering who we belong to and pointing others to our Savior, we shine His light in dark places.
