“[Jesus] did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”

Philippians 2:6-7
Sometimes when I’ve been out on a dry, dusty trail, I think of Jesus and His disciples trekking from town to town (not in the expensive hiking boots you or I might wear!) to teach and serve the people waiting for them. There were times of wondering where the next meal would come from or where they would sleep. They were always putting the needs of the crowd before their own needs.

There were no perks or special treatment for the disciples. Even though Jesus was the King of kings, people were more likely to sneer and talk down to those associated with Him.

Jesus called them as well as us to take the attitude and position of servants. We ask our outdoor participants to do the same as we are in the wilderness together. It’s a joy to explain why we do this—not just so things run smoothly out on the trails. It’s because our Savior “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). The dry, dusty path into Jerusalem became the way of glory when Jesus died on the cross for us.
