“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

John 3:16
As a teenager, I sang in a quartet for a Youth for Christ team. One Sunday night we were to be the “special music” for a church. Once we were ready to head up to the platform, our YFC leader said, “Curry, why don’t you give your testimony tonight?” I had never really shared a testimony, and I had no idea what to say. But there was no time to back out.

We stepped onto the platform, and God put this verse in my mind: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). I don’t recall much of what I said after sharing that verse, but it had to do with wondering who I’d be willing to die for and being amazed that Jesus would die for me.

Years later I discovered Paul’s words: “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:7-8). Today we celebrate a truly “down-to-earth” Christmas, when Jesus came down for you and me.

Insight

Christmas reminds us that God’s grace reaches far and wide. Our sins may be great, but He remembers none of them (see Jeremiah 31:34)!
