When I worked at McDonald’s many years ago, I always wanted to be the one who trained the new employees. They would follow me around to learn a few tricks and get the inside scoop on which managers were strict or lenient. But most importantly, I would revisit them from time to time to make sure they were getting along OK.
Training in the workplace, when done well, is similar to training someone in the faith. But instead of showing a person how to make a double cheeseburger, we’re helping a new believer understand what it takes to be a follower of Christ. When you were a new believer, do you remember how intimidating it was to open the Bible without knowing what to read or where to start in its thousand-some pages?
Just like Jesus’ 12 disciples who took part in His ministry, we need to be discipled, too. Eventually, we may even disciple others in their new walk with the Lord. Jesus uses us—mere human beings—to be the extension of His heavenly ministry on earth. That’s a weighty but wonderful responsibility. Don’t back down from it!
