“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.”

Isaiah 9:2
God created for us a world of beauty and wonder and artistry. He “saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:31). But humans rebelled against their Creator and brought sin into the world, marring God’s creation and snuffing out His light. So along with the light that this world has, it also (and until the end of time) is shadowed by despair.

Thankfully, the story doesn’t end with darkness, but with the invasion of light. Satan thought he had defeated God. But in the opening pages of Genesis, God revealed His plan to redeem mankind again and bring light into our sin-stained world. He promised a Messiah, a Redeemer who would be that Light for us.

The prophet Isaiah spoke of this day: “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them the light has shone” (9:2).

Centuries passed. God’s chosen people Israel continued down a path of disobedience and failure. They were captured by other nations and scattered. But God’s promises of a Messiah held true. And they still hold true for us today!
