“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.”

Genesis 1:31

When I was a young boy, I lived in the suburbs of Chicago. I never really had experiences out in “nature.” Didn’t get to enjoy much natural beauty beyond the sidewalks and small yards. At age 10 I moved to San Diego with my family and was introduced to the rolling hills and open spaces of the region. We took trips to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the north. My fascination and love of creation would evolve into a life-long passion for hiking, camping, and fishing in the wild.

As I have grown as a believer in Jesus Christ, I see that while creation is truly a gift from God, the greatest part of that gift is that it reveals Him to all of humanity. The beauty of creation testifies to the beauty of its Creator, declaring the glory of God.

Genesis 1 reminds us that it is God who made all things by the power of His Word, and He has given it to us to enjoy. When we understand this, we are free to delight in nature as a good gift. Then it will point our hearts and minds towards Him and not become something to worship in itself.
