“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.”

Romans 1:20
When Paul speaks here of God’s creation, he uses a Greek word, poiema, from which we get our word poem. How wondrous to think of God speaking His creation into being like poetry! All the tastes and sounds, textures and patterns, varieties of living creatures—all the endless wonders of the world are singing praise to their Creator. The crashing waves proclaim His power. Unfurling leaves speak of His life-giving love. Waddling ducks tell of His wit and delight. And it’s all poetry of the highest form!

Psalm 19 declares that every dawning day “pours forth speech.” The sun’s rising is a commonplace occurrence, but the psalmist calls us to ponder its message. It rises like poetry, like a “bridegroom coming forth from his chambers … running his course.” Every sunrise is a call to rejoice in the Lord’s promise to one day come and claim His bride.

Lately I’ve tried to slow down and hear what creation has to say. Even the little chickadees on a gloomy wintry day can flit among leafless branches and remind me of the Lord’s faithfulness to provide.
