“Your word, Oh LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures.”

Psalm 119:89-90

For my birthday several years ago I received a set of DVDs that capture stunning images from all over the world. These videos highlight remarkable animals, fascinating plants, and exquisite terrains that are found pole to pole. My family and I have enjoyed them very much. As I watch, I can’t help but think of the very first verse of the Bible: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

With just a word, God spoke creation into existence. He breathed His breath and brought light out of darkness, life out of nothing. “By the word of the LORD were the heavens made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth” (Psalm 33:6). His powerful word He gave the sea its boundary, painted the horizon on the ocean, created a sky filled with wonder, and carved the foundations of the earth. He brings out the stars one by one, calling them each by name. Even the wind and waves obey His voice (Mark 4:41).
