The religious leaders tried to trip Jesus up with a legal question about divorce. He corrected their view on marriage, but also said something profound about what it means to be human.
The passage Jesus quotes about the creation story in Genesis says humans are created male and female, that they come together in marriage, and that marriage creates a new entity, not to be broken. Notice that Jesus’ reference to Moses’ creation account also says humans are created in God’s image. There are different views about what that means, but it certainly gives us dignity. We did not rise out of the mud or descend from less-developed animals. The very image of God is in us. Even after sin entered the world, there remained a uniqueness and a glory to humanity. Jesus knew that and affirmed it. But since that image is marred, He died in our place to kill the sin in us and restore and perfect the image of God.
Do you ever feel small, worthless, insignificant? Be encouraged when you remember that when Jesus sees you, He sees Himself.
