“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.”

Colossians 3:1-2
Once we begin thinking about Jesus’ ascension, we see it all over in the Scriptures. And seeing it, we discover how it clarifies the meaning of today’s passage.

We often think of the above verses as promoting what’s been called “heavenly mindedness.” Then we wonder whether that’s a good thing, remembering the line not to “become so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good.”

Yet what these verses actually promise is glory, the glory that we’ve longed for with every compliment or promotion we’ve received. The glory we’re longing for is the thunderous applause of heaven. And Jesus’ ascension is the guarantee.

If we knew that certain glory lay ahead, how would we then live? I believe we would quit looking for it in the wrong places. We would step away from our favorite indoor sport: comparing ourselves with others. We would rest in His promise to receive us as His good and faithful servants.

Freed from time-wasters, we would be able to work wholeheartedly and serve most joyfully because our glory in our true and coming King is certain.
