“For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisors make victory sure.”

Proverbs 11:14
Imagine walking across a canyon hundreds of feet deep on a narrow, wooden bridge. Now imagine there are no handrails on that bridge. Frightened yet? I am! Sometimes walking through life can feel a bit like that. We’re keenly aware of trouble and certain death on every side. We find ourselves in what feel like “lose, lose” situations. None of our options seem like the right one. As today’s proverb tells us, where there is no guidance, a nation falls.

It is in those situations that God sends us counselors. Counselors are the handrails on the bridge that steady us in life’s precarious, unpredictable circumstances. They are friends, parents, pastors, elders, coworkers, spouses, or anyone else who is wise and who loves us enough to tell us the truth.

While an abundance of counselors leads to wisdom, they won’t always protect us from falling. We will still make missteps and sin, despite their best advice to us. Even so, wise counselors help us discern and hear God’s voice so that we may walk safely in His ways.
