“Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the sight of all people.”

Luke 2:29-31
Imagine the thrill in the air at the temple that day! Simeon had waited his entire life for this moment. The Holy Spirit promised him he would not die before seeing the Messiah. He takes baby Jesus into his arms, looks at him, and starts praising God. It is not just that he is amazed at the miracle of new life, as every parent is when gazing on their offspring. It’s that Simeon knows Jesus is the promised One.
In Him, Simeon sees God’s salvation for Israel and beyond to the Gentiles! All the promises of God are fulfilled in this tiny person. The Spirit gives Simeon the spiritual eyes to see the new life He will bring to the world through this child.
Simeon experienced the end of his waiting; now he could die in peace. There is a deep longing in all of us to finish well and enter God’s promised rest. We also long to know that evil will be vanquished and that wrongs will be set aright. When we look into the face of Jesus, we are given eyes of faith to see the One who is sovereign and victorious over all. Our Savior has come!
