“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything is accordance to his will, he hears us.”

1 John 5:14
The day of a dreaded dental appointment arrived and the news was not good. Extensive work would be needed. I felt terrified. So I called out to my Heavenly Father, and the answer came back, “You are in capable hands.” I had to remember that my dentist, a godly man, had provided excellent care for me over the years. My trust in him had been earned. He was worthy of my confidence so that I could look into his face and say, “I trust you.”

The apostle John knew from personal experience that it is safe to approach God and that He is trustworthy. In his younger days, John had walked alongside of Jesus. He saw the proof of God with us in the person of the living Christ. Now old and having been banished to the Isle of Patmos, John sent this written declaration of truth to others.

Everyday life is filled with countless opportunities to choose in what and in whom we will place our confidence. Slowly, the foundation of faith can be built as He extends His hand of mercy repeatedly until we can look into His face and say, “I trust You.”
